I just emailed a colleague in a special library in Edinburgh--they work on a project with the public libraries. She hadn't seen the article and was pleased that the absurdity of it all was being aired publicly. I certainly hope we've all read Orwell and remember Newspeak, "the only language in the world whose vocabulary gets smaller every year." I'm beginning to truly believe that we're in a profession which is being defined in narrower ways every year...as Kathleen notes.

Anybody but me remember Newspeak? First you redefine something, then you degrade it, then you eliminate it. This is disgraceful and disgusting, and the Edinburgh council should be ashamed of itself for taking such an action. Also, they might want to measure all the information-seeking activities in a library and see whether the activity has fallen off quite as much as they want it to.
