I think that candidates should prepare for their interviews well. Some
questions that are always good to ask the panel:
1. How long will you be here before you leave for a better-paying job?
2. The average tenure for the chief librarian here is two years. Is that
because the pay is so low, or because the mayor is insufferable?
3. Is this a real interview, or do you already plan to hire some relation
of yours; maybe you just need to interview three people and hope one accepts?
4. Give me three reasons why I'd want to work in a place that asks me
whether I'm really looking for the job advertised.
5. Your pay is below average for public libraries. How do you account for
this?
6. You don't seem to hire men. Is that because you feel threatened, or
because you have some sort of difficulty with your father that you're playing
out at public expense?
7. All the new hires here look like they were on the Mickey Mouse Club.
Can I get by without pom poms?
8. None of your staff teach, write papers or participate in association
work. Does this mean I shouldn't expect time off for library conventions?
9. You only have two computers for public use, and one of them is broken.
On the other hand, your carpet and drapes are new, and you've got scads of
new furniture. When do I get my abacus?
10. I notice that only newbies have to work nights and weekends, and that
the first perk of advancement is leaving the reference desk. Is that a sign
of what you think about your patrons?
11. My friend who works here says you guys gossip about interviewees. Does
that mean I can make fun of your hair on my blog?
