[Publib] playaways and batteries

Until last week, we provided the batteries; upon checkin the playaways were
sent to the backroom where staff changed the batteries and put them in the
security case. As our playaway collection continues to grow, we realized
that we were going through batteries a lot quicker and eating up budget $.
We decided to no longer provide them as of 1/1/09. The first patron who
checks out a new playaway will get the battery that comes with it, but now
when they're checked in, we'll simply case and shelve. We decided in
addition to not having to buy the batteries, we were freeing up some staff
time and getting them on the shelf sooner. We haven't had any complaints yet
- but it really is too soon to tell. (we put signs up several weeks ago
letting patrons know "as of 1/1/09 patrons will need to provide their own
batteries for playaways; thank you for your understanding").

Thanks,

Jennifer

We have some serious budget problems here, so before we started offering
Playaways we decided that batteries, earbuds, and lanyards were all
"consumable" items; either they would be used up (batteries) or someone else
would not want to reuse them, in the case of earbuds and lanyards. We sell
all of the consumable items if patrons want them; the batteries are $.50
each, earbuds are $1.50, and lanyards are $1. Since we charged from the
start, there have been no complaints, even though neighboring libraries
don't charge for batteries. For the most part, people supply their own, so
we don't sell many items.

JoAnn

Hello,

For the libraries that circulate Playaways, how do you handle batteries?

Do you provide rechargable batteries or do you rely on the customer's to
provide the batteries?

If you rely on your customers to replace the batteries are you willing to
share wording with me for PR purposes?

Thank you in advance for your help.
