I wonder whether in part this isn't a case of assuming that whatever the
private sector does is good, and whatever the public sector is bad. BISAC
was created by for-profit bookstores, therefore it's a good system, while
Dewey is in the realm of government employees, therefore bad.
I concur on never being able to find anything specific in a bookstore, and I
shudder over the thought of chucking Dewey without considering all the
ramifications. I'm not emotionally attached to Dewey by any means -- some of
it's just quirky and weird and reflects its age (as in, how many numbers DO
we want to devote to Greek and Latin, anyway). I do have a concern, as a
patron, that I not only be able to find a book that might interest me at a
library, but also to find a specific book when I need to. For all Dewey's
faults, I can find a specific book by myself at the library, which I
generally cannot do at a bookstore.
