Pat:
Our own Oak Lawn Public Library has begun placing films promoting and celebrating our services using YouTube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=540n5frRCN8 and plans to do more of this in the future.
Not only do we place our films on YouTube, but often insert links on our Website and on our Blogs for Teens and Local History. It may be prudent, however, to direct the links on your web site and blogs to a resource called http://www.teachertube.com/ rather than YouTube. We once had a resource from YouTube to which we linked on a Teen Blog and complaints came our way from parents who noticed that their youngsters were exploring beyond our links to other rather graphic and "indecent" films resident on YouTube. Naturally, the youngsters claimed that the Library web site and blog was where their exploration began and the complaints come our way. TeacherTube is a more carefully monitored resource from which to grab interesting resources for your blogs and from which younger patrons won't be able to wander into "questionable" films.
Perhaps Ireland has fewer controversies about "decency" and "protecting our kids" issues than the United States.
(I look forward to the inauguration of our President-Elect on January 20, 2009.)

Subject: [Publib] Using YouTube
Dear Colleagues,
This enquiry comes from Ireland.
I am wondering if any Library Directors or Senior Librarians in the United States are using YouTube as method of getting their vision for their library service out to the wider public. I am thinking of how your President-elect Barack Obama uses YouTube on a regular basis.
I am thinking in investing in a good quality HD camcorder.
I would then put on YouTube short statements from myself on what our library service is trying to achieve, and I would also post on YouTube brief filmed presentations of what goes on in individual branch libraries.
If this kind of thing is already happening in some public libraries in the United States perhaps some of the kind contributors to Publib would let me know.
A Happy New Year to all Publib readers.
Every good wish,
Pat McMahon,
County Librarian,

IRELAND.
