This discussion is not new--but is still apropos--
 
March 2009 marks the tin anniversary [decennial] of Steve Coffman's
article in Searcher entitled "Building Earth's Largest Library" in which
he posited a library delivery system based on an Amazon.com type model.
 
York U. Library in Canada has a nice site with background reading on
"One Big Library" [including a link to Coffman's article]at:

The last link will take you to the Wayback Machine archive site Clicking
on the link for Dec. 14, 2000 will take you right to an archived copy of
Coffman's article. The other resources look interesting as well.
