[Publib] "New Library" questions

If you are designing a building, it is a good time to consider a
drive-up book drop that stays open all day would be a great service to
your patrons who have small children or are disabled or just very busy
-- they can drop off books directly into the building, and pick up holds
at the drive-up window.

At SPL, the person manning the window is emptying the drop bins
throughout the day. There are drop slots for Children, Adult and AV
items.

The architect should consider how to shelter the drive up in inclement
weather (a portico or just an overhang so when it is raining they can
reach out of the car without getting themselves and your materials
wet.)

We lock our bookdrops during business hours and expect patrons to
return items to the library itself. This saves staff having to
continuously empty the bookdrop and ensures that returns are checked in
correctly as far as date and time. And, of course, it brings patrons
into the library where hopefully they will want to check out other
items. Since we don't have drive-thru bookdrops, in most cases entering
the library only takes a few extra steps.

Subject: [Publib] "New Library" questions

Hi All,
As I mentioned before, we’re in the process of designing our new
building in Boerne, TX. Our architects continue to ask us tough
questions that we’re not sure how to answer. First, how many of you lock
your book drops during business hours, and what are the pros and cons of
your decision to do so? Also, do you have special doors at your entrance
for ADA purposes as well as strollers? Thanks so much for any help you
can send our way!
