I am not sure about metal in general but I did work for a large book retail store for five years and we had to watch what kinds of metal sat by the front gates for long periods of time. The metal of the door frames didn't effect it any but if we had a large cart of things near it after a few months it would start to act up. We just had to move the cart for awhile and it would correct itself. I don't know how universal this solution or problem was but that was what happened with us.

And about the tin foil and theft?  YEP!! ALL TRUE!!  We actually tried this out one time and wrapped a bunch of secured CDs and DVDs in foil and walked right through the gates and out the door. We did it when no customers could see us and the alarms never went off. Kind of scary...
