RE: carpet alternatives? 

  We installed carpet squares in our meeting room last year, the theory being that we could just replace the worn or dirty squares as needed.  Sorry I can't tell you yet how well that has worked.  We bought lots of extra squares for that purpose, and Summer Reading has just finished, so we will be testing the theory soon, as our maintenance guy tries to pry up the old ones & install new.
