I highly recommend purchase and viewing of NYPL's The People's
Palace<http://www.shoppbs.org/product/index.jsp?productId=2784342>from
PBS.

I found it entertaining and inspirational. My understanding is that this
is
a remake of a film created about 20 years ago that edits out and replaces
former President and NYPL board members with the current
ensemble<http://www.nypl.org/pr/contacts.cfm>.
I would love to
see that presentation resurrected and offered in it's original format
to capture the essence of that time.

One of the things that I enjoyed most about the presentation is how the
NYPL recognizes and validates the need to collect diverse viewpoints and
make those
available for study. Representing diverse opinions is a fundamental
responsibility of Public Libaries. I have read so many comments on PubLib
over the years from well-meaning Librarians who choose to 'protect' their
patrons by excluding controversial material. Local politics and lack of
understanding by Trustees and Boards the role of public libraries in a
healthy democracy
certainly contribute to those decisions.

Perhaps viewing The People's
Palace<http://www.shoppbs.org/product/index.jsp?productId=2784342>can
help turn back the tide of
censorship.
