What kid respects books?

Funny you should mention. I have in hand a copy of My Spelling, a Ginn
and Company grade six speller once owned by the Edward C. Delano School of
Chicago. The acquisition stamp on the book is dated September 7, 1954. The
inside cover bears a stamp wherein the users of this book could put their
names--there are three there, Vanessa, Maria and Amber.

And, wonder of wonders, the book, now 55 years old, has no writing in it to
speak of except for a handful of stars next to some selected review words
on page six.

All those generations of users and no real damage to speak of, except a bit
of dog-earing on the corners. Call me prejudiced, but this book could not
have been touched by that many years of little boys--unless boy-children
in Chicago's West Side are much kinder to books than those elsewhere.

M. McGrorty, who loved books but sometimes dog-eared them too.
