[Publib] integrated reference collections

A couple years ago, in order to make room for our new TeenSpace, we
eliminated the Adult Services "reference collection" per se. We did a
thorough weeding of the collection then interfiled the remaining books
with their circulating brethren. We used the old reference space for AV
and the old AV space for teens. We haven't had a problem with patrons
trying to checkout out a reference copy and the staff has found it
easier to take patrons to one place for books on a topic instead of
taking them to two places. It's worked so well that our Youth Services
Department did the same thing with their reference collection last year.

I believe we may be buying fewer duplicate copies of titles but we
haven't eliminated things because of budget crunches...yet. Our funding
is up 5% this year (we are a district library, not part of any larger
government, and levy our own taxes) but will be flat next year and who
knows what will happen thereafter.

Subject: [Publib] integrated reference collections

Folks,

I'm trying to find out which libraries are integrating their reference
collections into their circulating collections? Who's doing this now
and who's contemplating it for the future? Pros/Cons? Any info would be
appreciated.

Thanks,

john

Subject: a question for listserv

Could one or the other of you send a question out to your listserv(s)
about whether libraries are jumping on the bandwagon to integrate their
reference collections into their circulating collections? I'd like to
know if any libraries in the northwest have already done this (or are
moving towards doing it).

We are going to start discussing the concept at the August CM meeting,
and I'd like to have a decision before the next budget is developed in
October. Thanks,

Martha
