I don't refute your friends' stories, Lisa, but I will say I needed an 
MRI right here in the USA just a few months ago.  It took me 3 months 
and persistence in the order of "above and beyond" from my doctor's 
nurse to get me an appointment.  I have what one would consider "very 
good" medical insurance, but they fought like h*ll not to grant me the 
'privilege' of an MRI my doctor wanted me to have.

Three months.  Not the very next day.  And only because I had a very 
very good advocate going to bat for me.  And only because I actually 
have insurance.  I would have gone without, of course, if I had no 
insurance.  Most of my friends are self-employed and can't afford 
insurance.  Our current system is complete unacceptable.
