I've done several simple and easy things.  Employees can be recognized at staff meeting and I stick a tiny star on to their name tag.  Everyone who took place in last year's sesquicentennial parade got a star.  The guy who realized there was tiny electrical fire going on behind the wall in a meeting room got one.  Etc.

I have also been known to give top banana awards - real fruit - and the occasional rotten apple award.  Although the only rotten apple award I can actually remember was in a previous job.  I gave it to the bookmobile driver who had hit a car in the parking lot:  mine.  I would never do a rotten apple award for anything serious, they are meant to be somewhat silly.

I think it is the public point of recognition before co-workers rather than the worth of the gift.
