[Publib] re self service holds

Many of our locations use the self service holds set up. I hate it for several reasons.
1. Patrons browse the hold shelves pull off what they want (not necessarily what they have requested) and bring the items to the circ desk. They can't check the items out but now the items have to be reshelved.
2. I don't want people knowing what I check out. The first three letters of first and last name wouldn't work. Too many marias, marys, margarets, marthas and too many Smiths, Kings, Jones, Garzas, Lopezes.
3. There are also security issues. One location had an ex-husband putting notes in his ex-wife's holds.
4. More privacy issues. No one needs to know I requested How to do your own divorce, Living well with HIV, Living well with Hepititis C, Natural ways to increase your fertility, How to survive a marital affair, What to do when you kid is gay....You get my point. People are nosy. Not all people but you know the ones and they are out there. Growing up I limited what subjects I checked out from our small town library because I didn't want it blabbed all over town. My sister worked there so I knew the staff talked.
Just a few things to consider and be prepared for if you decide to go with self service holds. I like the idea of giving patrons the option to opt out.
