[Publib] Staff recognition awards?

I worked for a place whose owners routinely gave out Christmas/End of year  
gift cards.  These ranged in value from 100 to 500 dollars and sometimes  
more.  Workers loved them.  Off to the mall they went.  And a few  months 
later the IRS sent them polite letters asking them to declare the gifts  as 
income.  Which they are.  Your employer will usually put these down  on the 
books--even if they don't, they are still income.  
 
I notice that employers are always eager to find ways to reward their  
employees.  How about paying them more salary?  That beats a  Starbucks card any 
day.
