I worked for a place whose owners routinely gave out Christmas/End of year
gift cards. These ranged in value from 100 to 500 dollars and sometimes
more. Workers loved them. Off to the mall they went. And a few months
later the IRS sent them polite letters asking them to declare the gifts as
income. Which they are. Your employer will usually put these down on the
books--even if they don't, they are still income.
I notice that employers are always eager to find ways to reward their
employees. How about paying them more salary? That beats a Starbucks card any
day.
