For the annual anniversary awards (given for increments of five years) we give Visa gift cards. Cash suits everyone. We package them differently each year: decorated flowerpots, decorated wine goblets, giant clothespin-memo-holders (decorated by a scrapbooker), quilted wallpockets (my contribution); this year fancy acrylic tumblers with floaty stars inside.
This is our second year of monthly recognition for staff development. Last year it was "go for the gold." We got bronze, silver, and gold medals (from Oriental Trading) and awarded them as staff completed the requirements. This year it's "three stars." We will be giving prizes: each level (1, 2, 3-star) gets a ticket. The tickets are put into the box. Each month winners are drawn, but all the other tickets stay in the box. Therefore the later in the year that you earn your tickets, the more competition there will be for the prizes. (I haven't figured out the prizes yet, but I think they'll be a restaurant gift certificates, paid time off, a gift certificate for books or media from our staff account. The total monthly expense will be under $50.)
If I receive another commemorative clock I will smile and say thank you. Then I will put the clock in the box for the next garage sale. (I sold three such clocks at the sale I had last weekend.)
