I have instituted self pickup of holds in 3 libraries over the last 12
years. We have SUCH a tendency to make things complicated in libraries.
I think this is easy for patrons and staff:

1.	Put patrons first 3 letters of last name and then on the next
line the first 3 letters of first name on a hold slip. Slip the paper
in the book so that slip hangs out. Put the cover either up or down,
just make sure the holds slip can be seen easily.
2.	Some ILS will let you program this so that when a hold is
triggered the abbreviated name is printed out.
3.	Privacy is protected this way.
4.	Fast for staff to alphabetize and pull outdated books that were
not picked up.

Why do it?

--patron ease. People can whip in and out to get their items. Not
everyone wants a relationship with their librarians (hard to imagine, I
must say)

--patron privacy, that way if you folks can check out on their own, they
can check out all those adult graphic novels without anyone knowing.

My 2 cents worth........
