That's a really interesting idea... We don't do anything like that that I
know of, but our calendar or events is fully integrated into the citywide
calendar that includes all kinds of other stuff (like Parks and Rec,
Schools, etc.).

You can take a look at http://app.calendar.rrc.dc.gov/directory.aspx and see
how it's viewable by thematic and location-based parameters. A little
clunky, but it's nice to have all that city info aggregated.
