That's fine if you are close enough to a sink or a restroom and can
leave your work to someone else while you wash your hands. And don't
have an allergic reaction to the soap used wherever you are.
It's impractical for a nurse every time she walks into a patient's room,
or for circulation staff or children's librarians who handle materials
and are around people all day long. Especially now when the recession
has caused so much contraction of staffing levels.
