Terry,

That is so funny - when we were touring libraries getting ready to design our own, we toured Palo Verde and noticed the ? sign right away - loved it too! Maybe because we are librarians we noticed it! Sigh! ...

Also in this issue is a picture of the library in which I work (Phoenix Public Library- Palo Verde Branch). We have a giant green ? over our bright red reference desk. No one EVER notices the ?. And when I point it out, they look up in surprise. We also, inexplicably, have a gigantic upsice down @ symbol over our teen space, which also goes unnoticed.

The best part of the picture though, is all of the people. I don't know who took the pictures of all the other libraries, but they seem to have avoided customers in most instances. You can't avoid customers in my library:) In fact, on M/W/F, we open at 11 and have 50-100 people standing outside at 10, staring in at us, like we're fish at the aquarium:)

Check out the April issue of "American Libraries" to see interesting
interiors. I think it was the Norfolk, VA, library that had the big
information sign. I just gave away my issue this morning.

I love the "?" idea. How simple, yet so informative.
