[Publib] "Used" books?

That is the practice at the Central Arkansas Library System--at the Main
Library and at branches. We post signs asking that books not be
reshelved, and we provide book carts near the stacks where "used" books
may be placed. All books cleared from tables are counted as well.

Subject: [Publib] "Used" books?
In many (perhaps most?) academic libraries, there are signs requesting
patrons to please *not* reshelve books. There are at least two
reasons: making sure the books get reshelved correctly; and tallying
the books that get used in the library, not just the ones that get
circulated. Have any public libraries ever tried this? I realize it
requires some additional effort up front, but it might also save time
later--for both patrons and staff--when trying to find a book that got
reshelved incorrectly.
