The earthquake in Italy has affected a mountainous region, centering on the  
ancient town of L'Aquila.  the first link provides a description (in  English) 
of the area's attractions, many of which are housed in ancient  buildings 
very vulnerable to earthquake damage.  [You will note in news  photos the 
preponderance of collapsed buildings are of old unreinforced masonry  construction.]

This second link shows the Salvatore Tommasi public library, also housed in  
an ancient building.  The text here is simple enough:
 
"La Biblioteca Provinciale 'Salvatore Tommasi', aperta ufficialmente nel  
1848, è una biblioteca pubblica. La sede principale è al centro della città, in  
Piazza Palazzo; una sezione staccata opera nei locali del complesso abbaziale 
di  Collemaggio. Essa ha il duplice compito della conservazione e della  
divulgazione, al fine di promuovere le condizioni perché si eserciti l'effettivo  
diritto di ogni cittadino allo studio, alla ricerca, all'informazione e alla  
cultura."
