Hey Alison,

Have a look at the AWE Early Literacy workstations http://www.awe-net.com/.
We replaced our Gates computers with them in 2008, using some state grant
money. They are Dell machines with all kinds of children's programs in
English and Spanish. So far, they are popular and reliable. I think other
languages are available, to.

Subject: [Publib] Computer Games/Software for Young Children
-Recommendations?

We used to have some Gates' PCs at one of our branches, which were loaded
with a number of games that library staff/patrons really enjoyed (Barney,
Cat in the Hat, etc.). At some point, they were transferred over onto a few
Windows XP machines, but had some issues. A few weeks ago, I had to
reload/replace one of the PCs that happened to have those games on them. I
cannot find the original CDs with the games (well before my time at the
library). I tried transferring over the games from one of the other PCs to a
USB drive and then tried to load, but ran into some errors. At that point, I
decided it would be better if we loaded some recommended game software that
was made for more current hardware and deploy it at all three branches, on
the children's computers. These would be an alternative for parents who
don't want their children to get on the Web, go to a game site. My request
to PUB-LIB is for recommendations on child-friendly games/software,
particularly for very young children (preschool)?

Thanks in advance for any recommendations/advice,

Alison
