We receive advance reading copies from a number of publishers. Baker and Taylor sends the strongest language in their introduction letter, stating:
"Please note: Advance Reading Copy Editions are for REVIEW PURPOSES ONLY. They are not for resale nor should they be added to your regular collection for circulation purposes."
We have a "Share a Book" program, which may or may not fit into the parameters of publishers guidelines for accepting their ARCS. We put selected titles, usually the more esoteric or those by new authors out on a table, with a Library sticker on them, and another sticker that says:
"Share a Book" Take a book home, read it, return it, or pass it on to a friend, Turn in an opinion slip or email us at ... with your review of this book."
We put slips in the books with a "thumbs up" or "thumbs down" space for writing a short review. We've gotten some great comments urging us to either buy the book for the collection, or to not bother. The whole idea is sort of modeled after the yellow bike project, if that rings a bell.
Most of the books are returned, and we then donate them to the local USO chapter, who distributes them at the USO airport facilities for soldiers who are flying out overseas.
So. Any opinions? Is this out of bounds?
