First off to Mr. Schallan, my compliments for your contribution to "What
I would want in a librarian" discussion, it was an enjoyable read.
A word of explanation about my last name. My dad's side of the family
is originally from Lithuania. When his paternal grandparents arrived at
Ellis Island at the turn of the previous century, they shortened the
spelling of their surname since the Lithuanian spelling was lengthy and
gave the present version to the immigration officer.
Growing up, I've heard my last name murdered by mispronunciation. I've
heard everything! In college, I had a German-American philosophy
professor who pronounced it correctly (for a change!) on the first day
of class. While on summer study aboard in Paris four years ago, I heard
it pronounced "bab-bell" by the teacher. When I'm telling people how to
pronounce my last name, it's "bay bull."
Since I'm of Lithuanian descent, little wonder why I enjoy fresh made
kielbasa at Thanksgiving!
