[Publib] moving a library

Last year we did the very same thing - moved 60,000 some odd materials one mile to a new building. We kept one circulation computer going in the old library until we opened in the new building and continued to check in materials daily. (But we had people prying open the nailed shut bookdrop weeks and weeks after we moved so we had to keep checking on that.)

We mailed holds to patrons but didn't send items through our courier. Libraries in our consortium knew we would be closed for 2 weeks and wouldn't be sending and receiving items.

The moving company we hired was terrific and library staff was simply amazing. We had color coded and numbered different collections to match color coding on the new shelves but we did lots of shifting and shelf reading anyway.

Subject: [Publib] moving a library

In about 8 months the Beloit Public Library will be moving into a newly renovated building about 1 mile from its current location. We would like to start planning several aspects of the move and would love some advice. We will be shut down for approximately 2 weeks during the move and we need advice on what to do about holds, returned materials, paging requests from other libraries in the consortium, etc... Any ideas/thoughts/suggestions would be most appreciated.
