[Publib] The Hydrox: the new PUBLIB mascot?

Being a lurker more than a frequent poster, sometimes I get really busy
and don't look at my listserv folders for a week or so. I feel totally
guilty when the count reaches high double digits. When I get a bit of
free time I open the folder and scan the subject lines. If something
sounds interesting I read it - if something doesn't sound interesting I
don't read it. I've been known to delete hundreds of emails in one fell
swoop.

Summers are always too, too busy so I wasn't reading a lot, but I was
aghast at the nastiness going 'round there for a bit. It was personal,
which is very unprofessional.

I for one have always appreciated Joe's humor and while I can't stand
Hydrox cookies (sorry) I learned a lot from reading a couple of the OT
posts. One of the reasons I LOVE working in libraries is that I tend to
learn one or a dozen things every day - that day it just happened to be
on PUBLIB instead of from a patron.

With all the things going on in the world today I just simply do not
have the time or the patience to get concern about whether or not
chocolate cookies are relevant to library work - although I have eaten a
lot of cookies at the library.

Humor is nice and greatly appreciated, especially when I've dealt with
snarky patrons. Off-topic posts are nice, too, because we can all learn
something - trivial as it may be one never knows when the information
may be needed and passed along.

I can deal with off-topic posts by deleting them if I don't have time to
read them ... heck I delete ON-TOPIC posts when I don't have time to
read them. What I can't deal with is folks who like to stir the pot just
for the sake of stirring the pot, and I certainly can't abide a career
without humor.

My cent's worth,
-- Sherrie

I have two PubLib buttons. One has a stylized dandelion, the other has a
spiderweb and the phrase, "5,000 of your closest colleagues."

How about a new button with a photoimage of a Hydrox (the top side of
the wafer) with PUBLIB superimposed? (Are there copyright issues to
consider?) That artwork could be available by e-mail so that we can
make our own. (That's easier than having someone responsible for taking
orders, mailing out, etc.) (My library has a button-maker, and if yours
doesn't, surely a neighboring library or a school does....but do
investigate investing in one--it's great for promoting the library and
producing souvenirs of events....That said, I'm currently envisioning
photo-transferring that artwork to fabric adding some embellishments,
and sewing a pinclasp to the back.)

Once upon a time, we had a PubLib button with a dandelion on it:
ubiquitous wildflower seen everywhere dispensing its little flowerlets.
I liked that. There is something to be said for both the Hydrox cookie
(C is for Cookie, that's good enough for me, saith the Sage C.M.) and
the garlic clove. We should discuss this.
We should definitely have a PubLib entry on Wikipedia. If Karen or Sara
would be so gracious as to post whatever basic description/history we
have, many of us will be more than happy to add to it.
