Hello,
I wanted to give you advanced notice on the deadline to apply for Picturing
America, as we have corresponded about you Abraham Lincoln programming. The
deadline for Picturing America applications with be April 15th. Please feel
free to contact me if you have any further questions about the Program.
Through April 15, 2008, public libraries have an opportunity to obtain an
exciting poster set entitled Picturing America, a special project produced
in collaboration by the American Library Association and the National
Endowment for the Humanities. The series includes twenty laminated posters
(24" by 36"), two-sided, with a teacher's resource guide.
Picturing America spans a wide sample of American art, including a number of
images with strong Pennsylvania associations: an Amish quilt, Frank Lloyd
Wright's Fallingwater, the Leutze painting of Washington crossing the
Delaware, and Hiram Powers' sculpture of Benjamin Franklin. Pennsylvania
artists Mary Cassatt, Thomas Eakins, and N.C. Wyeth also are featured.
Only public libraries or schools are eligible to apply for a free set of
posters. The application requires only that posters be displayed and used
during the period of September 2008 through May 2009 (next full school
year). To apply, please go directly to the link.

Picturing America also is a timely resource for libraries planning to
commemorate the Abraham Lincoln bicentennial in February 2009. Picturing
America includes the haunting Alexander Gardner photograph of a pensive
President Lincoln in February 1865. The poster could accompany a Lincoln
book display and provide a backdrop for an event next February.
