Thought I'd chime in...

If you're working in a division at a large public library, over time you'll come to know what's in your collection in that reading room. If you're asked to do substitute desk coverage outside of your division, it'll give you a chance to see what they have in that reading room.

My favorite reference desk tool is People, Places, & Things: A List of Popular Library of Congress Subject Headings with Dewey Numbers. (it's a OCLC publication) As the title reads, it lists LCSH with Dewey numbers beside the entries--it'll remind you of the LCSH schedule books. This book has been a time saver numerous times for me!
