We are also a small library with only one desk area for everything. We
“installed” a sit down portion for our circ desk about 1 ½ years ago (we
took a desk and put it in-between the modular sections of our circ desk).
It is great for the slower times, so staff can do some other work if need
be, but the big point was that the kids love it! They can see over the desk
and watch their items being checked out.

We have a section of desk that is stand up as well, which is very good for
the busier times and for staff that want to stand. I agree that you need to
watch being glued to the short desk and chair, but it is nice if you can
have both.

The new thinking I have heard, even for reference, is to have high desks so
staff is at eye level with patrons. Personally I don't think that working
at a circ desk while sitted is very practical; it slows things down, limits
mobility and the staff will appear not "ready". Also, many libraries have
drastically reduced the the area of circ and the size of the desk due to
almost total reliance on self-check stations. A small circ desk is referred
to for taking care of fines paid in person and other circulation related
problems.

Hello!

Our library is currently under renovation and the Circulation Manager has
suggested we take the opportunity to rethink the circ. desk and plan a low
one where staff can sit and do the check-ins and check-outs.

Anyone out there who has worked with low circ. desks? Feedback would be most
welcome!
