We still use plastic bags, but they are recycled. Patrons bring us old
“Wal-Mart” or other retailer’s bags to reuse at the library. Makes less in
the landfill, plus doesn’t cost us anything except for a place to store
them. Surprisingly enough, we usually are not overrun with bags…..

Subject: [Publib] Anyone eliminated plastic bags?

Has any library eliminated the use of plastic book bags entirely? Our
friends group has graciously purchased canvas book bags that the library
checks out to patrons - there are no fines on these, but they do show up as
an item on the record. However, we have continued to supply plastic book
bags as well. Now some of our friends have expressed grave concern that we
are still using plastic and feel that tax dollars should not be used to
purchase bags that may end up in the landfills.

Has anyone gone entirely to re-usable book bags? How did patrons react? Did
staff still keep a "stash" of plastic bags in spite of the "elimination"?

Thanks in advance for any responses,
