Royal Oak (MI) Public Library discontinued use of plastic bags several
months ago. In a partnership with the city environmental awareness
committee and through use of the city solid waste fund, the Library
purchased reusable bags that are made out of recycled plastic bottles. The
Library sells them at less than cost and uses the revenue for 'green'
programming. $2.00 each; three for $5.00. You can read

Subject: [Publib] Anyone eliminated plastic bags?

Has any library eliminated the use of plastic book bags entirely? Our
friends group has graciously purchased canvas book bags that the library
checks out to patrons - there are no fines on these, but they do show up as
an item on the record. However, we have continued to supply plastic book
bags as well. Now some of our friends have expressed grave concern that we
are still using plastic and feel that tax dollars should not be used to
purchase bags that may end up in the landfills.

Has anyone gone entirely to re-usable book bags? How did patrons react? Did
staff still keep a "stash" of plastic bags in spite of the "elimination"?

Thanks in advance for any responses,

Ray Arnett
