I wanted to give you a brief update on the status of PLA's Communities
of Practices (CoP's). As you know, PLA has developed communities of
practice in a location called www.PLAspace.org
We have developed our communities in the same tool that ALA is using
to develop their communities. Eventually, our communities will be
merged into the ALA tool when the ALA tool is completely built.
Members have stepped forward to assume the role of community
moderator/manager, and we thank them for taking on this leadership
role. We are all learning as we go and we thank-you, thank-you,
thank-you!
Currently, we have the following CoPs on www.PLAspace.org (and
growing--members can belong to as many CoPs as they want):
Branch Libraries - Paula Settoon - 18 members
Cataloging - Sally Smith - 31 members
Collection Development - CynthiaB [Cynthia Bischoff] - 17 members
PLA Staff - Doug Dawson - 2 members [Established for us to post stuff
outside of CoPs]
Public Library Systems - kdenero [Kim DeNero-Ackroyd] - 4 members
Readers Advisory - MadlynS [Madlyn Schneider] - 115 members
Rural Libraries - Dwight_McInvaill - 25 members
Technology - Amy Terlaga - 77 members
See the invitation from Doug Dawson, PLA Web Services Manager, (below)
to participate in a chat on Friday afternoon:
First Friday Afternoon Chat 10/03/08 3-4 PM CDT
Join PLA staff and the PLAspace developers in an informal chat session
Friday, October 3. There is no formal agenda. We will simply be
demonstrating the chat room feature and sharing comments about the
site, libraries, the baseball post-season(?) - whatever you want to
chat about. Except politics. No politics!
Please feel free to spread the news about the chat. It will be a great
informal session for folks to learn about CoPs and the site. I figure
my role will be to answer questions, much as I did table by table at
the All Committee Mtg in Anaheim. If anyone wants to participate, they
can by going to www.PLAspace.org and creating a user account, and then
logging in at the appropriate time.
Best,
Greta
