[Publib] Possible scam

A tactic I've used at home might work fine at the library although I
haven't tried it:

I've received telemarketer calls where the caller begins by asking, "How
are you doing today?" or something like that. I've launched into the
weather here and asked them about their weather and blathered on for a
while before announcing, "Well, it's been nice talking to you but I've
got to go now." Then I hang up without giving them an opportunity to
tell me why they called. Only once has anyone called back and said, "You
didn't give me a chance to tell you why I called."

At home, the worst ones for us were when my son graduated from high
school. The recruiters wouldn't leave us alone! They stopped calling
when they got his younger sister and she told them Max had had his leg
amputated!

I didn't post my original message because I was taken in by the hard
sell, but more so others would be aware they might get a similar call.

I, too, am often terse: "No, we do NOT accept books on review", "We
aren't buying anything right now", "Not interested, thank you."

I once saw a hilarious list (on the Internet) of suggested scripts to
use with telemarketers and "courtesy" callers of every type. I wish I
could find it again. The one I remember specifically was to interrupt
the caller abruptly by yelling "Oh my god my couch is on fire!" and slam
the phone down.

In reading this thread, I am kind of surprised that so many people
actually talk to book telemarketers. Maybe I am just mean but I tell
them no and HANG UP! They get no chance to get a word in edgewise, or
maybe they do but I am no longer on the line!
