"It is submission to police and fire that kept librarian wages so low for so
long--how many cops in a given town have a master's degree?"

My experience, recently having received a MPA degree, was that there was one
librarian in the program and 4-5 police officers - a couple who have
continued on into the PhD program.  Beyond this I see most officers very
involved in non-degree training.  Knocking down the police or fire men and
women does nothing to advance the peceived value of librarians.
