One wonders whether public libraries and public schools would have
support in today's economic and philosophical climate if they were on
the ballot as brand new institutions. In my state vouchers and tax
credits for private education are being supported by conservatives.
I don't think we can assume that support for tax-supported
institutions is a "given" anywhere in the country as state and local
officials wrestle with where to make cuts.
