We should like to make you aware that the ASCLA Exceptional Service Award has been changed to include an additional service population. Outreach programs or projects to "older adults, and adults with physical or mental disabilities, who live in group homes and residences" are now eligible for recognition by this award. Group homes or residences may include nursing homes, assisted living facilities, apartments for the elderly, retirement complexes, half-way houses. The standard remains exceptional library service.
The full text of the Award description is as follows:
"A citation presented to recognize exceptional service to patients in a medical facility, to persons who are homebound, to inmates, to older adults, and adults with physcial and mental disabilities, who live in group homes or residences as well as to recognize professional leadership, effective interpretion of programs, pioneering activity, and significant research."
Past winners of the award have included the Outreach Services Department of the Johnson County Library, Kansas (2006) for its diverse services to children, inmates, persons with disabilities, homebound adults; Queens Library, New York (2005) for its multilingual, multicultural "New American Programs" for prisoners in the N.Y. correctional system; the Miami-Dade Public Library, Florida (2003) for its "Connections: Library Services to the Homebound" program.
Individual winners have been: Linda Lucas Walling, Professor, University of South Carolina LIIS, (2001) for serving as a model for librarians serving people with disabilities through her teaching, research, and leadership; Michael Gunde, Division of the Blind, Florida Bureau of Education,(2002) for his professional service, leadership, and advocacy on behalf of people with disabilities; and Diana Reese, institutional library services coordinator, Colorado State Library (2007) for her service in developing some of the best prison libraries in the country and her continual vigilance in assuring access to libraries for offenders.
