I am responding to Kevin O'Kelly and Monica Casanova about ESL classes.
I am a recently certified ESL teacher (2005) and a reference librarian
in the Northwest. Having spent 4 glorious years in college in MA, I
would be glad to "volunteer" to instruct your ESL classes just to return
to MA! Seriously, ESL as well as Citizenship classes could and should
be offerings through the local libraries....and I emphasize classes.
Talk Times are fine but unless guided by a certified instructor are
social occasions that are good, but certainly not as productive as
classes. I have taught ESL in our local community and it ranged from
Hispanics from Mexico, Russians, Iraqis, and a wonderful group of Bantu
women who relying on oral tradition, had never learned to read or write.
At the present time I am working on a curriculum for teaching
Citizenship Classes, and would be glad to field any questions about
materials, frequency and any other queries about ESL classes.
Thank you,
Mary Allen
