Hi-
You are right Karen, that is a choice for ALA members. At least that
was true a little over a year ago when I went and changed my addresses
with ALA (moving, you know).
For Conference registration, though, I think it is all or nothing. I do
know that there was a Council thread either before or after Midwinter
where several prominent Councilors (including past EB member Janet Swan
Hill) were not getting invites, and Mary Ghikas found it was the box
that was checked.

When I was on the Website Committee, this was a huge issue, and at the
time, we were reassured that ALA would provide a way to opt-out of the
vendor mail BUT get ALA-only mail by selecting “Just ALA, Please.”
Michael, with your Council and Exec Board experience, are you advising
that this is no longer the case?

Hi Connie-
Andrea Johnson (great to see you at PLA in Minneapolis!), answered your
question correctly. Exhibitors can purchase lists of registrants. This
is an income stream for ALA. *You* can control if they get your name or
not. There are two ways, one is the check box on the registration form,
the other is in your membership record and preferences which you can
look at (and change), online at www.ala.org ( http://www.ala.org/ ). You
will need your ALA membership number (I have mine memorized), and will
need to set a password the first time you log in.
HOWEVER, if you choose not to get any mailings, you will also not get
invitations to ALA events. Some ALA Councilors have found this out the
hard way.
Hope this helps....ALA does value its members, and ALA gets paid for
"giving away" your address.
