Maybe I can try to paint a picture from the (small) vendors POV?
We pay a lot of money to ALA/PLA, etc. to get the word out to our potential
audiences. Like $2,000+ a booth, not including chairs, lights, tables,
carpeting, travel, transport, hotel, meals, etc. etc. Then of course they
charge you extra to do that automated card thing (I just took business
cards).
Except for the established or major vendors, very seldom do the exhibitors
get the equivalent of their expenses back in sales during/after the
conferences. Most people want to be reminded of your service/product,
granted, not over and over, but at least in the exhibit hall and for a brief
time thereafter.
Please let responsible vendors try to reach you without automatically
accusing them of being spammers. We hate spam as much as you do. If you're
not interested, just delete it.
Maybe you might need whatever it is that we're selling/promoting?
