Hi Connie-

Andrea Johnson (great to see you at PLA in Minneapolis!), answered your
question correctly. Exhibitors can purchase lists of registrants. This
is an income stream for ALA. *You* can control if they get your name or
not. There are two ways, one is the check box on the registration form,
the other is in your membership record and preferences which you can
look at (and change), online at www.ala.org. You will need your ALA
membership number (I have mine memorized), and will need to set a
password the first time you log in.

HOWEVER, if you choose not to get any mailings, you will also not get
invitations to ALA events. Some ALA Councilors have found this out the
hard way.

Hope this helps....ALA does value its members, and ALA gets paid for
"giving away" your address.

When I register for ALA or PLA I give them my email address. It seems
obvious to me that they then give it to every vendor or even sell it.
Since returning from PLA I have hit the unsubscribe on 3 or 4 sales
emails a day. Most of them companies we have no desire or reason to do
business with. Just this morning it was Elsevier.
Now I realize my email address isn’t secret, but it bothers me a lot
that ALA gives it away in bulk. I’m not even a member any more!
Is this standard business practice? Do I have any control over this?
Ha.
