[Publib] car repair databases

I've been following this thread with interest both as a librarian and as one
who's done a lot of auto repair myself.

I always found the Haynes series of great value. Each book covers only a
few years of a particular marque and model, both domestic and foreign. They
are designed for the amateur mechanic and furnish excellent illustrations
and photographs of the particular operation being discussed. One valuable
feature is that they will state that some operations should be left to a
dealer. Commensense safety precautions are stressed, and required tools are
cited, along with "work-arounds" to avoid specialty items.

The downside is that, to my knowledge, they are available only in paperback,
and a not especially strong binding at that.

If you have room, I would suggest keeping your print manuals. There are, at
least in my library community, many who do not have the skills needed to use
the database, nor are they interested in learning. Of course we will help
them at the desk, but many still prefer the regular print manuals to look
through themselves. This may depend on the type of community/users you have.

We subscribe to both Ebsco Auto Repair and AllData. They each have their
pros and cons as others have already mentioned.

For you libraries that have an online auto database, do you still carry the
actual manuals also? Or has the manuals gone by the wayside?

Thanks
