I have some experience with PublishAmerica. They are not a vanity
press, but a print on demand press. They pay royalties to their
authors, and can print small or large runs as needed.

We get about 75 magazines/journals and have had very few problems.
Those we

Hello Patti,
I've been involved with Adult Programming since 1992. It seems there is
no perfect time to schedule a program. It's best to think of your
targeted audience. For example, we hosted a program on Iwo Jima last
year. We scheduled it for late in the afternoon. Over 140 people
attended. The audience consisted of seniors and WWII veterans for the
most part. It's best to offer programs on a variety of days and
times...even on weekends. Good luck with your new position!

Greetings All,
I have recently been put in charge of adult programming at my public
library. While trying to get events set up, I have run across a
question. I am trying to figure out what time of day to offer these
programs. I know certain audiences will have a preference. But is there
a better "all round" time to offer programs for adults to serve a larger
population? If anyone has any suggestions or input, I will gladly hear
it.
These programs would include current issues as well as author visits.
Thanks so much for your time and thoughts,
Patti

Greetings.
I have a question to which I cannot find a conclusive answer. I hope
someone "out there"
can point me in the right direction.
Is PublishAmerica (and others of that ilk) a self-publisher or vanity
press or what? Authors
who use this press call me to encourage me to purchase their books.
They seem quite
insulted if I ask about the status of this press and insist it is not
self-published or a vanity
press.
I cannot seem to discern enough information from the website.
Insights would be appreciated.
Thanks.

PublishAmerica is a self-publisher. They try to avoid the "vanity
press" label (and the "self-publishing" label) by paying a nominal
advance of $1, but their business model depends on the author and the
author's friends and family buying the (over-priced) books; they don't
have bookstore distribution, they don't promote their books, they
publish anything submitted to them.
This article (from a well-respected editor) is from 2003, but
everything in it still applies:

A librarian from Clinton CT called and identified the Cape Cod book.
Nowhere near McGillicuddy - "The Maytrees" by Annie Dillard. Thank you

Hi. I need your advice again. I would like to suggest new protocols
for computer sign up. We give out tickets to keep numbers and write the
time on them (for 1 hour's use.) It's cumbersome, especially in the
summer. Can you tell me what procedures you use for your public
computers?
Thanks!!

Robbie,
We use software products from Envisionware for managing our public

print management. I am extremely happy with these products. Let me
