We use about 250 hours per week of shelvers. They are part-time, 10 - 18
hours per week. We have some day-time shelvers, but most work evenings,
Saturdays and Sundays. We are a community library that serves a
population of 48,000, with an annual circulation of about 935,000.
Circulation staff (not shelvers) sort materials onto carts by department
- Children's, Reference, and Readers Advisory. Shelvers pick up their
department's materials, take them back to the home department, where
they "rough sort" them on the rough sorting shelves, then load their
carts and reshelve the materials. Patrons are encouraged to browse the
sorting shelves, and do!
Shelvers also "read" shelves to make sure things are in order when they
have time. They also shift the collection when an area gets too crowded.
For what it's worth, we hire shelvers for their alphabetizing, sorting,
and decimal skills. Circulation Clerks are selected for interpersonal
skills and basic computer skills, since they interact directly with
patrons.

Subject: [Publib] PAGES
Just wondering, do many libraries out there still use pages to retrieve?
materials for hold lists and re-shelve materials? Do you have full time
pages, part time pages, or volunteer pages? Or, do your circulation
clerks perform this kind of work now? If you reply, please give me an
idea of the size of your library
