One of the best programs we did at my former library (Missoula Public in Montana) was a night of readings with targeted readers. Let me explain - a mom read "In the Night Kitchen" and talked about reading to her 3 year old; one teen read from "Who Killed Mr. Chippendale" a challenged book by Mel Glenn, and another teen read from "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings;" one of our older library board members read from a Ben Franklin essay (Advice on the choice of a mistress); another board member read from "Fahrenheit 451;" the children's librarian read from a Laura Ingalls Wilder book; a local public radio personality read a Shel Silverstein poem; my son read a fairy tale......and so forth.

Subject: [Publib] Banned Books Week adult programming
Good afternoon,
I am interested in hearing about what libraries have done for Banned Books Week adult programming in the past. I am considering inviting community leaders and dignitaries to read excerpts (one page or less) from banned and challenged books. Does anyone know of a resource of such excerpts or have any recommendations as to what works/doesn't work?
Thank you for any advice or suggestions,
Kim Braun
