[Publib] RE: PAGES

We call them "shelvers," because most people don't know what a "page" is (or there are jokes about pageboys, etc.). We have six who work a total of 90 hours per week - ranging from 8 to 19 hours. We also have volunteers who shelve (average 12 hrs/week).

Our service population is 42,000.

My first paid library job, 40 years ago, was as a shelver. The supervisor said it took me longer to shelve a cart than any of the others because I had to look at every single book to see if I wanted to read it.

Just wondering, do many libraries out there still use pages to retrieve materials for hold lists and re-shelve materials? Do you have full time pages, part time pages, or volunteer pages? Or, do your circulation clerks perform this kind of work now? If you reply, please give me an idea of the size of your library.
Thanks
