We call our shelvers Stack Maintenance Aides. They are all part-time, and their primary responsibility is reshelving print materials. I think some are classed as permanent part-time, which means they are eligible for some benefits. (At our branches the support staff shelves. These may be clerks or aides.)

Our library serves a population around 115,000. The main library has three public floors plus a basement area. The aides pick up requests that have been made by phone, and, evenings and on weekends, retrieve books from our depository - a closed stack area in the basement. (During the work day, we call our technical services staff and they retrieve books from the depository and send them up to the first floor circulation desk.)

Just wondering, do many libraries out there still use pages to retrieve materials for hold lists and re-shelve materials? Do you have full time pages, part time pages, or volunteer pages? Or, do your circulation clerks perform this kind of work now? If you reply, please give me an idea of the size of your library.
Thanks
