I'm a retired librarian and I've read the messages related to "old
librarians" with interest. A colleague once told me that he was going to
hang around until it was no longer fun. That's pretty much what I did.
Another way of saying it would be "until you're no longer making a
difference." If you're still having fun and still making a diffference, why
hang around until you're a hundred if you want to.
I enjoyed my career as a working librarian and I enjoy retirement. I've
chosen to stay connected to libraries in a variety of ways including my
efforts to promote library history.
During my career, I had the good fortune to know and work with some
extraordinary people who worked in and promoted libraries. On my website, I
