Hello Publibbers,

I arrived this afternoon in Minneapolis for the Public Library Association National Conference. This is going to be a wonderful week for about 12,000 public librarians, other library workers, library advocates, and our vendor partners!

Even though I sent the announcement below a week or two ago, I wanted to send it again & invite you to contact me to discuss our Deputy Director position. Either you or some other great librarian & library administrator who you know may be the perfect match for our own great staff and community! If you'd like to talk, please email me or call me at 919-201-9200. Thanks!

Skip Auld
Director, Durham County Library

We have recently created a Deputy Director position as part of fulfilling our strategic plan Saying Yes to the Community: Durham Builds a Customer-Centered Library. This is a great position in a great community, where the library system's getting better every day!

Durham County Library seeks an experienced, energetic and highly motivated individual for the position of Deputy Director. Durham County, a progressive and diverse area with 260,771 residents, is home to Duke University, North Carolina Central University, Research Triangle Park, and the Durham Bulls Baseball Team. Durham County Library is experiencing tremendous growth. In June 2006, we opened the first of four 25,000-sq.-ft. regional libraries; in September 2006, we re-opened the historic, restored, renovated, and expanded Stanford L. Warren Branch Library; and in January 2007, we opened the second regional library. We have groundbreaking for another new regional facility this summer and for the expansion of an existing branch to a regional library this fall or winter. Main Library is also scheduled for a major renovation as part of a transformed downtown that, within the next decade or so is expected to have $10 billion in private and public
 investment.

A sampling of Durham’s annual events includes the American Dance Festival, Full Frame Documentary Film Festival, Bull Durham Blues Festival, and the North Carolina Gay & Lesbian Film Festival. You will find a great climate, wonderful book stores, restaurants, hiking and biking, two library schools, great educational institutions and more in the Durham/Chapel Hill/Raleigh Triangle area. Atlantic beaches and the Blue Ridge Mountains are two to four hours away by car. As stated in one goal of our strategic plan, we as a library system embrace and promote our cultural heritage and thereby contribute to this vibrant community. Diversity is truly a cherished value of our entire community, which according to January 2008 population estimates includes 96,463 African American, 118,205 White, 31,476 Hispanic, 10,855 Asian, 730 Native American, 121 Pacific Islander, and 2,921 people of 2 or more races.

The Deputy Director will oversee the operations of public service for the entire library system. The ideal candidate will possess superior leadership and interpersonal communication skills to successfully organize and direct library staff in providing exemplary library services to the public. He or she will work closely with the Director in developing and implementing strategic plans, policies and procedures, planning and organizing for effective public service; coordinate the provision of public services with public facility managers and the Administrative Council; work closely with the Assistant Director for Administrative Services to ensure that system personnel and training needs are met; work with the Assistant Director of Facilities Management and Development to ensure that system facilities needs are met; supervise Public Service Facility Managers; and work with the Library Board of Trustees in the Director’s absence.

The position requires a master’s in Library Science or MLS equivalent from an ALA-accredited program with a minimum of 5 years experience in a supervisory or administrative position in a public library. Advanced graduate coursework in public administration is preferred but not required.
Salary range for this position is $59,171 - $101,869.
